This is not me. This is not the life I was meant to have. I was the girl from Chennai, the one who had dreams, ambition, and a future so bright. I was always strong, always in control. So how did I end up here, lost in a life I don’t recognize? It all started with love—or at least, what I thought was love. He was my world, my everything. I trusted him blindly, built dreams around him, believed every promise he made. But in the end, he walked away, just like that. Left me standing alone, shattered, questioning if I was ever enough. I told myself I would be fine. I had survived bigger things, hadn’t I? But this pain, this emptiness—it was too much. I needed something to numb it, to forget. That’s when I said yes, just once. One time to ease the ache. One time to feel nothing. But it didn’t stop at one. The pressure, the loneliness, the weight of being an Indian girl so far from home—it all pulled me deeper. The calls from amma, anna, and appa felt like a test I was failing every day. I wanted to be strong for them, but I was falling apart inside. They have no idea. If they ever find out, they will bring me back home in a second. No more dreams, no more future—just shame, just regret. Maybe that’s what I deserve. But deep down, I miss home. I miss waking up to filter coffee, amma’s scolding, the sound of Chennai before the city wakes up. I miss the girl I used to be, the one who didn’t need an escape. I don’t know how to go back. I don’t know if I ever can.

I am Smitha, born and raised in Chennai. I always thought I was strong, disciplined like my anna (brother), and responsible like my papa. But somewhere, miles away from home, I lost control. When I moved to the USA for my higher studies, everything felt new, exciting, and so different from home. The freedom, the late nights, the parties—it all felt like a movie scene I had never been part of. I don’t even know when it started. Maybe it was the first time I tried just for fun, or the second time when I needed a little push to stay awake for exams. But soon, it wasn’t fun anymore—it was a need. Now, I look at myself in the mirror and I don’t recognize who I see. My anna and papa have no idea. If they find out, they will pull me back to Chennai without a second thought. They have worked so hard to send me here, to give me a future, and I am ruining it without even knowing how to stop. I miss home. I miss the smell of filter coffee, the early morning temple bells, the sound of amma scolding me for waking up late. But I don’t know how to leave this life behind. Oye listen na, ek gal puchni hai… Shaadi hoyi hai ya bas intezaar likha hai kismat ch? I mean, technically I am married, but what’s a marriage where your husband is more with duty than with you? I am Navjot, an army wife, and people say, “Waah, you must be so proud, so lucky!” Haanji, proud taan bohot haan, but pride doesn’t fill up lonely nights. Every festival, every birthday, every anniversary—he’s somewhere else, while I sit with my phone, waiting for a call that might not even come. Plans? Hamesha cancel. Date nights? Bas video call te chehre vekh lende haan. Arguments? No time for that also, kyunki agla banda already duniya de sab ton vadda excuse leke baitha—duty. Baki duniya normal lagdi hai. Couples go out, fight, make up, cuddle, and move on with life. But my life? It’s on hold. I know he loves me, I know he doesn’t have a choice, but I didn’t sign up for being married to silence.
